FsFan - The Net for Flight Simulation
=====================================
FsFan was founded by Mathijs Kok back in 1986 as a way to exchange
information and to have a good time with FS4. We did not want to form
a usergroup, discuss contributions and spend lots of time organising
instead of having fun in the air. So we set up small squadrons (less
than 10 members) in several cities. This idea seems to work and we
have got now squadrons in Holland, Belgium and Germany.
The pilots of a squadron meet once a month and they are very active
building scenery and utilities for FS4. The squadrons will use the
flights other squadrons have flown at their meetings. The atmosphere
at those meetings is very relaxed, we like to toast our incredible
flying skills with a drink and tend to laugh loud when a crash is
heard. In the air though we are very serious and try to make flying
as real as can be.
Once or twice a year we organise big meetings, we call them
Interstate races. There, individual pilots (or small teams) can prove
they are the best pilots that ever lifted from the earth surface.
Like at our 'normal' meetings we consider the Interstate races as
parties and will have a lot of fun. The winner of the race is
considered the Dutch Champion and will be honored until the next
race.
To coordinate these efforts we started a BBS, the FsFan BBS in
Diemen, Holland in 1990 and it was a major hit from day one. On the
BBS we try to coordinate scenery building and give writers of scenery
files and utilities the opportunity to get in touch with their users.
Also a Flightsim related topic is allowed. We tend to have very
relaxed rules and will not interfere as often as in other mail areas
in other nets. We like to be as independent as possible and do not
like rules made by others so we started our own Net. In this net many
BBS's are connected to exchange our mail and file area's. The FsFan
Net is Fido standarts compatible but not part of Fido because we will
feel their rules will not allow us enough freedom. For example, we
allow commercial articles (adverts, if you like) in our mail area's
because we feel they are usefull to simpilots.
We do however check the BBS's that want to be connected to FsFan
because we will try to be only connected to BBS's which are
respectable, serious and are run by dedicated Sysops.
Our file base is the fundation of the net. We have over 80 megabytes
of files for download. They are selected, checked and catagorised. We
use a simple way to classify files and will always have the latest
version available. We feel it is the best FS Collection of all times
because we try to delete files which are outdated or replaced by
newer versions.
The mailarea is very active and of high quality and the users
seem very willing to answer questions. Beside that, it is also very
like FsFan itself: serious, but we do like some fun.
Today the FsFan Net is a prime source of information relating to the
Flight Simulator issue worlwide.
The FsFan Net spans the globe, we are available around the
world from Vladivostok, Russia to Naire, Australia, across Europe and
the United States, our users are known for their knowledge and skills
and many of the best known files were written by FsFan members.
We are always happy to share our enthousiasm with newcomers.
